SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion - Garden Spells - by Sarah Addison Allen
DESCRIPTION:“In a garden surrounded by a tall fence\, tucked away behind a small\, quiet house in an even smaller town\, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel\, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree\, and the extraordinary people who tend it.… \nThe Waverleys have always been a curious family\, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom\, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation\, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit\, and its edible flowers\, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures. \nA successful caterer\, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful\, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile\, her elderly cousin\, Evanelle\, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister\, Sydney\, who fled Bascom the moment she could\, abandoning Claire\, as their own mother had years before. \nWhen Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own\, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in\, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind\, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other. \nEnchanting and heartfelt\, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own….” \n~ Fantastic Fiction.com \n

Fifteen years old\, gawky\, egotistical\, and recently orphaned\, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage\, this very modern\, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective. They are soon called to Wales to help Scotland Yard find the kidnapped daughter of an American senator\, a case of international significance with clues that dip deep into Holmes’s past. Full of brilliant deduction\, disguises\, and danger\, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice\, the first book of the Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes mysteries\, is “remarkably beguiling” (The Boston Globe). \n

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion – The Book Woman Of Troublesome Creek – Kim Michele Richardson
DESCRIPTION:The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything—everything except books\, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project\, Troublesome’s got its very own traveling librarian\, Cussy Mary Carter. \nCussy’s not only a book woman\, however\, she’s also the last of her kind\, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project\, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble. If Cussy wants to bring the joy of books to the hill folks\, she’s going to have to confront prejudice as old as the Appalachias and suspicion as deep as the holler. \nInspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930s\, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage\, fierce strength\, and one woman’s belief that books can carry us anywhere—even back home. \n

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion – Demon Copperhead – Barbara Kingsolver
DESCRIPTION:From the acclaimed author of The Poisonwood Bible and The Bean Trees\, a brilliant novel that enthralls\, compels\, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity \nSet in the mountains of southern Appalachia\, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer\, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair\, a caustic wit\, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice\, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care\, child labor\, derelict schools\, athletic success\, addiction\, disastrous loves\, and crushing losses. Through all of it\, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities. \nMany generations ago\, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for listeners of this novel\, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South\, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion\, and above all\, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys\, and all those born into beautiful\, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind. \nmbitious\, and invigorating story about family\, friendship\, hope\, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion – The Measure – Nikki Erlick
DESCRIPTION:A luminous\, spirit-lifting blockbuster that asks: would you choose to find out the length of your life? \nEight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice. \nIt seems like any other day. You wake up\, pour a cup of coffee\, and head out. \nBut today\, when you open your front door\, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live. \nFrom suburban doorsteps to desert tents\, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant\, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise? \nAs society comes together and pulls apart\, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And\, if so\, what will they do with that knowledge? \nThe Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined\, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown\, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush\, a doctor who cannot save himself\, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything. \nEnchanting and deeply uplifting\, The Measure is a sweeping\, ambitious\, and invigorating story about family\, friendship\, hope\, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion – West with the Night – Beryl Markham
DESCRIPTION:Markham is often described as “the first person” to fly the Atlantic east to west in a solo non-stop flight\, though most now dispute this claim. When Markham decided to take on the Atlantic crossing\, no pilot had yet flown non-stop from Europe to New York\, and no woman had made the westward flight solo\, though several had died trying. Markham hoped to claim both records. On September 4\, 1936\, she took off from Abingdon\, England. After a 20-hour flight she crash-landed at Baleine Cove on Cape Breton Island\, Nova Scotia. In spite of falling short of her goal\, Markham had become the first woman to cross the Atlantic east-to-west solo\, and the first person to make it from England to North America non-stop. She was celebrated as an aviation pioneer. Markham chronicled her many adventures in her memoir\, West with the Night\, published in 1942. Despite strong reviews in the press\, the book sold modestly\, and then quickly went out of print. After living for many years in the United States\, Markham moved back to Kenya in 1952\, becoming for a time the most successful horse trainer in the country.

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion – The Tiffany Girls - Shelley Noble
DESCRIPTION:New York Times bestselling author Shelley Noble wows with a gripping historical novel about the real-life “Tiffany Girls\,” a fascinating and largely unknown group of women artists behind Tiffany’s most legendary glassworks. \nIt’s 1899\, and Manhattan is abuzz. Louis Comfort Tiffany\, famous for his stained-glass windows\, is planning a unique installation at the Paris World’s Fair\, the largest in history. At their fifth-floor studio on Fourth Avenue\, the artists of the Women’s Division of the Tiffany Glass Company are already working longer shifts to finish the pieces that Tiffany hopes will prove that he is the world’s finest artist in glass. Known as the “Tiffany Girls\,” these women are responsible for much of the design and construction of Tiffany’s extraordinary glassworks\, but none receive credit. \nEmilie Pascal\, daughter of an art forger\, has been shunned in Paris art circles after the unmasking of her abusive father. Wanting nothing more than a chance to start a new life\, she forges a letter of recommendation in hopes of fulfilling her destiny as an artist in the one place where she will finally be free to live her own life. \nGrace Griffith is the best copyist in the studio\, spending her days cutting glass into floral borders for Tiffany’s religious stained-glass windows. But none of her coworkers know her secret: she is living a double life as a political cartoonist under the pseudonym of G.L. Griffith—hiding her identity as a woman. \nAs manager of the women’s division\, Clara Driscoll is responsible for keeping everything on schedule and within budget. But in the lead-up to the most important exhibition of her career\, not only are her girls becoming increasingly difficult to wrangle\, she finds herself obsessed with a new design: a dragonfly lamp that she has no idea will one day become Tiffany’s signature piece. \nBrought together by chance\, driven by their desire to be artists in one of the only ways acceptable for women in their time\, these “Tiffany Girls” will break the glass ceiling of their era and for working women to come.

SUMMARY:Book Club Discussion - The Cuckoo's Calling - Robert Galbraith
DESCRIPTION:The Cuckoo’s Calling (A Cormoran Strike Novel\, 1)\nThe Cuckoo’s Calling is a 2013 crime fiction novel by J. K. Rowling\, published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. \nA brilliant mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel’s suicide. After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan\, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client\, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office. \nThen John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister\, thelegendary supermodel Lula Landry\, known to her friends as the Cuckoo\, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide\, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties\, rock-star boyfriends\, and desperate designers\, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure\, enticement\, seduction\, and delusion known to man. \nYou may think you know detectives\, but you’ve never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous\, but you’ve never seen them under an investigation like this.

SUMMARY:Book Club - The Glass Castle
DESCRIPTION:The Glass Castle – by Jeannette Walls \n“The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption\, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober\, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination\, teaching them physics\, geology\, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank\, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family. \nThe Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed\, clothed\, and protected one another\, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them\, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered. \nThe Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.”

SUMMARY:Book Club - A Trick of Light by Louise Penny
DESCRIPTION:With A Trick of the Light\, Louise Penny takes us back to the deceptively peaceful village of Three Pines in this brilliant novel in her award-winning\, New York Times bestselling series featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.\n\n“Hearts are broken\,” Lillian Dyson carefully underlined in a book. “Sweet relationships are dead.” \nBut now Lillian herself is dead. Found among the bleeding hearts and lilacs of Clara Morrow’s garden in Three Pines\, shattering the celebrations of Clara’s solo show at the famed Musée in Montreal. Chief Inspector Gamache\, the head of homicide at the Sûreté du Québec\, is called to the tiny Quebec village and there he finds the art world gathered\, and with it a world of shading and nuance\, a world of shadow and light. Where nothing is as it seems. Behind every smile there lurks a sneer. Inside every sweet relationship there hides a broken heart.\nAnd even when facts are slowly exposed\, it is no longer clear to Gamache and his team if what they’ve found is the truth\, or simply a trick of the light.

SUMMARY:Book Club - Britt-Marie Was Here
DESCRIPTION:Britt-Marie can’t stand mess. A disorganized cutlery drawer ranks high on her list of unforgivable sins. She is not one to judge others—no matter how ill-mannered\, unkempt\, or morally suspect they might be. It’s just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms\, which is certainly not her intention. \nBut hidden inside the socially awkward\, fussy busybody is a woman who has more imagination\, bigger dreams\, and a warmer heart that anyone around her realizes. \nWhen Britt-Marie walks out on her cheating husband and has to fend for herself in the miserable backwater town of Borg—of which the kindest thing one can say is that it has a road going through it—she finds work as the caretaker of a soon-to-be demolished recreation center. The fastidious Britt-Marie soon finds herself being drawn into the daily doings of her fellow citizens\, an odd assortment of miscreants\, drunkards\, layabouts. Most alarming of all\, she’s given the impossible task of leading the supremely untalented children’s soccer team to victory. In this small town of misfits\, can Britt-Marie find a place where she truly belongs?
