Challenge Yourself!

Whether you would like to learn something new or improve on existing skills, these challenges offer something for everyone! Have fun, and share your work on our Facebook page!

Today in Jelveh‘s class, she mentioned Heather Trimlett’s 40 bead challenge. I learned so much doing this years ago and I don’t think you can over-do this exercise. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced lampworker, this project will still teach you something.

To be included in the Dragon’s 40 Bead Challenge Gallery, send your pics to the web-team. There is no time limit or expiration date. Heather would also love to see how you do, so please send her photos of your work too! Send them to beads (at) Heather Trimlett dot com. You can find plenty of inspiration on Heather’s 40 Bead Challenge Pinterest Page!

Tips:

  • Look at Heather’s Pinterest page to find color combinations you like. There is nothing like making 10 of these and then starting over because you hated the colors. Pick two colors and stick with them.
  • If you sit at the torch and don’t know what to make, do this — your challenge beads will add up quickly!
  • Try making a few beads whenever you begin a session at your torch — but no more than 5 or 6 at a time!
  • There is a lot of discussion out there on whether to use rods or stringer. Use rods. It will force you to have better control.
  • To make your work more precise, you must work cooler (father away in the flame) and s-l-o-w-e-r.
  • Keep in mind that every time you add a dot, you add more glass. Plan ahead!
  • Those complicated patterns in your head have more dots, and you could inadvertently end with MUCH bigger beads!
  • Avoid criticizing your work! You are doing this exercise to improve, and you will — guaranteed!
  • Have fun with it! If you aren’t, then it is time to take a break.
  • String your beads in the order that you make them. You will notice a difference in your skill from first to last.
  • Most important — don’t give up. The gains are worth the pains!
