Setting up a Home Studio with Safety in Mind
With Rick Sherbert and Julie Gutsch
Scheduled by the Firebirds, this talk is hosted by the Dragons due to unforeseen events.
Rick Sherbert, former Glass Director of the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA, will walk us through setting up a home glass working studio and answer questions – write them down, so you won’t forget! Julie Gutsch will walk us through creating her home studio.
After the Presentation
Rick Sherbert worked as a professional glass blower for 25 years, and more recently was director of the glass program at Workhouse Art Center for a few years, so he knows studios. He detailed all the safety aspects that should be considered when configuring a home glass studio, taking into account the ways in which what we do can be dangerous – cuts and burns, things that can blow up, and unhealthy fumes. He showed us examples of what not to do, as well as the correct way to set up our studios. He reminded us that safety is the most important thing to consider prior to melting any glass.
Julie Gutsch told us of her experiences installing her first home studio. She explained the entire process and went into detail about how she handled the all important ventilation issue. Julie gathered information from multiple sources to plan and create the best and safest result she could. Electricity, ventilation, duct work, interior and exterior walls, floor, wall & table coverings – all are things to be considered as we plan a studio
Thank you Rick and Julie for generously sharing your knowlege on this extremely important topic!
