An Afternoon with
Terry Henry
Working with Heavy Metals
Thursday, February 18, 2021
We welcome Terry’s return to our Speaker Series.
Terry Henry is known for her electroforming skills, but she also makes beads. She will be showing us how she makes one of her favorite beads, involving the addition of copper mesh and silver foil placed deep into a lentil bead. The addition of heavy metals in beads provides the most unusual textures in glass with an affect that can be almost reptilian.
Come join Terry as she shares the technique of creating a bead that is caged in copper mesh, and having a silver flower with a gold center blooming on the other side.
She will demonstrate how to turn silver into gold, pull silvered ivory stringers, add deeply poked holes and tame a pile of glass into a lentil form. And best of all there will be a drawing for the demo bead at the end of the talk!
You can learn more information about Terry and her lampworking journey and see her work on her website.

Terry showed us some fun stuff with heavy metals in her demo – using techniques that may come in handy for the current Steampunk Swap! The bead Terry was wearing was one that she created using copper mesh and silver glass. It had two different “faces” on the surface that made for another great way to use this method.
For the Demo, Terry started with a long narrow bead, then added a “slug” of glass, which was done by adding glass swipes on only one side. She then applied copper mesh, and heavily encased it for safety and to preserve the color – she credited Sheri Bellamy for starting her down that path. On the opposite side of the bead, she used clear and transparent glass, silver foil and specific encasing methods that helped her make an ethereal flower with a gold center.
Once Terry had all of the glass applied to those two areas, she added more encasing where needed, formed the bead into a lentil shape, decorated it with goldstone stringers, twists and Double Helix dots.
The techniques Terry demonstrated gave us many new ideas and methods to create our own style of large lentil beads using copper mesh, silver foil and lots of layering.
Thank you Terry for giving us a great demonstration and getting our minds whirling with how we can use these techniques.
Thank you Terry, for sharing your time and expertise with us!
