Our speaker tonight was Jean Gribbon, PhD, RN and the Executive Director and Founder of Beads of Courage. Beads of Courage (BOC) was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in Tucson, Arizona. Next year will be a banner year for BOC as it will be their 20th Anniversary. They provide 14 million beads a year to children, families, caregivers and nurses which is amazing.

There are a variety of ways beads are used to encourage children. Beads of Courage has a variety of ways bead artists can contribute. They rely on a network of workers as well as volunteers who make this organization the success that it is. Some beads are manufactured and purchased to be given per the prescription card below, i.e., a yellow bead is given if the child is away from the comfort of home.

Handmade beads made by bead artists are given for Acts of Courage, Defining Moments, and other things as determined by the caregivers. The larger, more distinguished beads are for transplants such as bone marrow or organ transplants. Heart beads are always needed. Purple hearts are now purchased so they are uniform and are usually given at the completion of treatment.

Beads of Courage can use your support either financially or by donating your beads and sending them to BOC.

If you are a bead artist who does shows, supports BOC and would like to have something to put on your table to show your support, you can contact Beads of Courage and they will help you get a BOC emblem for your table.

You can find more information about Beads of Courage on their website and Facebook page, including information about donating beads. They also welcome financial support – every $15 helps provide 500 program beads for the kids!
