An Evening with

Robin Schultes

Three Tiered Cake

Thursday, August 18, 2022

Robin Schultes has been playing with Glass for almost 30 years, and taught both glass blowing and flameworking for 13 years at the Toledo Museum of Art. She is co-creator of the YouTube channel Scottwood Research.

In January of 2020, Robin and her husband Patrick started their YouTube channel to share their passions of teaching and creating. Robin will be answering any questions we might have about her, the Dungeon Studio, and anything flameworking related. We look forward to her demo of a three tiered cake – with a cake stand!

Robin Schultes is an accomplished glass artist with an educational background including an art degree from the University of Texas, as well as attending college in Bowling Green. She retired from the Toledo Museum of Art after 13 years all while continuing to work in glass.

She and her husband have a YouTube Channel titled Scottwood Research so make sure you subscribe. They live in the Old West End neighborhood in Toledo, Ohio, which has Edwardian Arts and Craft homes which has always been Robin’s dream. There is a museum in the neighborhood which brings in world renown glass artists to teach classes, which enables Robin to meet glass artists she never thought she would be able to meet.

Robin uses a Hellcat torch because she uses both soft glass and borosilicate glass. For her demonstration tonight, she used soft glass to make a three tiered cake on a cake stand. She said it takes her about an hour and 20 minutes to make these. They are beautiful and it was amazing to watch her start making the components she would use for the cake.

After making the components using her color theme, she started making the 3 tiered cake using a minimal amount of tools. Her mandrels have the bead release dipped in the middle so she can hold the mandrel at either end depending on what she is doing.

After Robin completed the 3 tiered cake shape, she began decorating with the bicolor stringers and twisties. Robin also made a lovely cake stand and candle to finish this beautiful 3 tiered cake.

This Cake Looks Good Enough To Eat!
