Dog Days of Summer
by Lilli Berry
Bead by Marcy Lamberson
The beginning of July ushers in the appearance of the night sky’s brightest object, Sirius, the Dog Star, which coincides with the hot, sultry days (& nights!) of summertime, known as the “Dog Days of Summer”. Ancients believed the god Sirius [Greek-“scorching”] to be the embodiment of the constellation of Canis Major [Greater Dog], who controlled the weather, bringing on the excessive heat and powerful thunderstorms, due to the burning brightness of the Dog Star and the long blazing sun-filled season.
Dog Days have been referenced in several cultures and in modern pop culture to represent much more than just long hot days, such as Japanese anime.
So what do the Dog Days of Summer mean to you? Does it bring to mind melting Popsicles? Cooling off in the pool? Sun and stars? Baseball? Or actual dogs?
There are plenty of dog tutorials on YouTube and on the Glass Dragons YouTube channel. Marcy Lamberson (shown above) and this cute blue and white pup Red Riot (Kokomojo Creations) – both did doggie beads, and Janie Jones did ice cream cones.
Get creative and make something that represents what the Dog Days of Summer mean to you, and show your creation’s pics in comments beneath the Facebook Challenge #63. Happy Torching!
